Depression Hack: Your Reality Is What You Make Of It

“Reality is Subjective”

One way to effectively deal with depressive thoughts is to consider this notion: Reality (the world or state of things as they actually exist) is subjective (based on or influenced by personal tastes, feelings, opinions or perceptions). 

We are going a bit out on a limb here, but stay with us. 

Your reality is what you make of it. A wise friend once said that your life is your own personal movie. You choose what scenes you want to include in it. This refers back to our post on how “Thoughts Affect Feelings.” You are in control of how you choose to deal with life, which in turn, is your reality.

The following real-life example illustrates the point.  

*Jim and his twin brother *Joe grew up in the same household. They were raised by the same parents, taught the same morals and values, and essentially had the exact same upbringing. Their parents never played favorites and treated their sons equally. 

At age 22, both brothers were asked to give an account of their childhood. Jim reported that his experiences were mostly wonderful, carefree, and fun, and said that he had loving supportive parents. Joe stated that he had a tough time growing up and always felt neglected by his strict, authoritative parents. 

Although both brothers shared almost identical experiences, each one created and lived in his own reality. There can be a myriad of reasons why one brother’s perception was so different from the other brother, but that doesn’t change the fact that two alternate realities existed. Who is to say that Jim is right and Joe is wrong?  Each sibling believes what they believe because that is what is real and true to them. No matter what Jim says, Joe does not see it his way and vice versa. 

People can experience the exact same thing, but in completely different ways according to their own reality. It’s really what makes us human; our own free will. Therefore, you can see that we all have the power to choose our reality by changing our thinking, and shaping it any way we want to.

We are not trying to simplify this, because changing your thought process and thus, your reality, is challenging, but it is possible. You can choose to focus on the good instead of the bad; choose to think positive thoughts instead of negative ones; choose to treat others the way you would like them to treat you; and choose to be a good person.  It’s an incredible notion to consider.

Mold the kind of reality you want to exist in.
