Advice: Ignore Internet Trolls

As all public forums do, we have gotten some comments on from Internet Trolls. While we are happy to receive intelligent comments that challenge us, intrigue or inspire us, the comments from Trolls never warrant a response.

Wikipedia defines Internet Trolls as follows:  In Internet slang, a troll (/ˈtroʊl//ˈtrɒl/) is a person who sows discord on the Internet by starting quarrels or upsetting people, by posting inflammatory,[1] extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community (such as a newsgroup, forum, chat room, or blog) with the intent of provoking readers into an emotional response[2] or of otherwise disrupting normal, on-topic discussion,[3] often for the troll’s amusement.” (Wikipedia)

WordPress is wonderful about automatically blocking most of the types of comments Trolls try to post. As most of you know, they also give writers the option to approve or disapprove of any comments that will appear on their site. If, however, you happen to read one of the blubbering’s of an Internet Troll aimed at upsetting you, you must not allow yourself to react. No matter how vicious the written attack is, or how low the Troll has gone to try to get to you, it is important that you do not respond.

The best way to handle these Trolls is to ignore them. They hate that because they thrive on drama. If they can’t get a rise out of you, they lose. Therefore, if you do not respond to them, it is no fun and they move on to their next victim. Learn to recognize Trolls for who they are and refuse to take their bait. There is just no sense in getting into a battle of words with someone as cowardice as a Troll hiding behind anonymity. We guarantee that if you were come face to face with these Trolls, they would not have the nerve to even look you in the eye, let alone confront you with an issue. They are not worth acknowledging.

If you happen to know someone who is an Internet Troll or rapidly becoming one, steer clear. Unfriend them. Block them. Delete them. Do not subject yourself to anything they say or do. We’ve mentioned this before in our post about how to deal with bad people getting good stuff (“Run Your Own Race”) and we will say it again . . .

Move on. Run your own race and let others do whatever their wicked heart’s desire. Once again, they don’t matter. As long as you stick to your own moral code, honor your value system, and keep on doing good, you will benefit. Surround yourself with like-minded people who lift you up and add to your joy, and simply cut out the rest.

It’s important that you stay in control of your own life. You determine how to react to whatever life gives you. IGNORE THE TROLLS IN LIFE. Be vigilant. Guard yourselves. Make the right choices and the time you are given in this life will be spent wisely.
